Four people in the forest

Volunteers from a previous year carrying out the forest health assessment.

Jefferson Land Trust is seeking volunteers to help conduct hands-on forest health assessments on several of our nature preserves to evaluate the ecological integrity and functions of the forests. The assessments help us identify areas of our preserves that need the most attention to accomplish our various management goals.

Volunteers will participate in a group training from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Friday, September 13 with Jefferson Land Trust staff to go over the assessment protocol, navigation, and practice using diameter tapes and other equipment needed for data collection. This fall, the forest health assessments will need to be completed before the end of October.

Volunteers will work in teams of two to four for quality control and safety, as the assessments require walking off-trail, through thick brush, and over uneven terrain. This project also involves entering data into an online data form after the in-the-forest assessment is complete.

If you’re interested in volunteering to be on the forest health assessment team, please contact Cristina Villalobos at cvillalobos[at]saveland.org by Wednesday, September 11. Thank you!
