Forest health assessment volunteers in 2023.
Jefferson Land Trust is seeking volunteers to help conduct hands-on forest health assessments on several of our nature preserves.
Forest health assessments help us evaluate the ecological integrity and functions of forests and streams within our preserves. Our goal is to have ongoing and historical evidence of the progress that our care and management is making at our preserves. Assessments like these provide clear indications about which areas of our preserves need the most attention to accomplish our various management goals.
Volunteers will participate in hands-on training (from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm) on Friday, March 28 with Jefferson Land Trust staff to go over the assessment protocol, navigation, and practice using diameter tapes, and other equipment needed for data collection. This spring, the forest health assessments will need to be completed before the end of May. Volunteers will work in teams of two to four for quality control and safety, as the assessments require walking off trail, through thick brush, and over uneven terrain. This project also involves entering data into an online data form after the in-the-forest assessment is complete.
